Final Cut Film Opening REVIVE
Here it is in all its glory!
Evaluation Question 6 - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
In addition to the technology used to film and edit our opening, there was also the use of blogger. A technology which has caused us a lot of problems. We have learnt from blogger to always be prepared for everything early as we could not upload videos from the macs, therefore they had to put on a memory stick and taken home to be uploaded. In addition, I was unable to upload photos therefore these had to either be done from school or emailed to the others to upload. It has been helpful in us tracking progress however we have learnt that it is very temperamental and can cause problems.
Evaluation Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?
In our media product, the two-minute film opening 'Revive', we aimed our target audience of teenage girls, and certified it a 15 which means it is not too restrictive and fits our desired age category of 16-21 year olds. In order to successfully capture the interest of our target audience we needed to make sure we had many aspects to it which would appeal to them. Below I have listed some of the aspects we discussed and considered:
Protagonist= Our main character is the age and gender of our desired target audience which makes the audience able to relate to her more easily thus increasing their interest into the film.
Sound= The music we used was urban and had a moody emotional feel to it. This particular music would appeal to our target audience as it is the genre of music they would generally listen to, with artists with similar style in the charts today.
Props=We have used a bottle of gin as our main prop. Our target audience are at the age where they may be considering drinking alcohol socially or abusing it. This is an easily relatable prop and this may interest the viewer further.
Flashbacks= In the flashback the main character and her mother are having an argument. This is very common and relatable to teenagers who are our target audience. This adds further interest.
Key moments in the opening that would particularly attract the audience:
This is a screenshot of when we first fully meet the protagonist. The fact it is a medium close-up and focuses on her face and make-up, is a key moment because female teenagers at that age are typically concerned and conscious of how they look, and this represents that making it relatable to our audience.

This is a screenshot of the bottle of gin that she was drinking. This relates to what I previously said about the props. Our target audience are at the age where alcohol could potentially be an interest to them therefore, captivating there interest.

This is a screenshot relating to what I have previously said about the flashbacks. The mother and protagonist are having an argument representing the stereotypical 'norm' issues between teenager and parent making it easily relatable.

This is a screenshot of our protagonist walking into her own bedroom. As you can see the walls are pink, there are musical posters above the book case, their are photos of friends an family on the door and, a white and pink spotty dressing gown on the door. All of these are stereotypical props to have in a teenager girls bedroom, which fits our target audience.
This is a screenshot of when our main character walks in and you can see the contrast of her scruffy attire and some expensive heels she has worn before. This shows that the main character can be sloppy and look like she doesn't care, but at the same time is conscious of how she looks and will make an effort. This could be extremely relatable to our target audience.

Evaluation Question 3 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
What is a production company?
Overly the production company are the people that oversee the creation of a film, from the start right until the final product. They help with budgeting, scripting, scheduling, casting and other tasks within the process. A major responsibility which they have is choosing not only directors, but also some appropriate actors for the roles. The production company are also those responsible to overcome any problems which arise throughout any point of production.
Where would money come from to produce a film alike ours?
Our film would be classed as an independent production, it contains no famous actors and has not been produced, or distributed by a major Hollywood company. For films like this, money is difficult to find, one of the problems being due to the lack of rich, or famous people involved in the production. A lot of the time directors and producers of these films have to raise and use their own money to produce their films, in the hope the profit will be larger than the investment. Hedge funds are another option to creating money to produce films, however especially with the current economy, these are much less common.
Who gets named in film titles, and why?
Generally, the names in film opening sequences are the important ones within creation. Not everyone can be named. A normal order is the distributing company, then production company, closely followed by the 'star' or main actor. We followed this as we felt that these were the most important things to mention from the beginning. The next to appear were two 'co-stars', obviously within a film there would be more than the three actors, however we felt that for opening credits, only the key ones were necessary. A lot of films follow this and mention the rest of the actors in the ending credits. After these key names, we mention particular people that have had a large part to play in the production of the film these are: casting, costume and makeup, music, director of photography, editor, screenplay, producer and finally, director. Higher budget films would mention a great deal more however as we are an independent small production, only the key things needed to be mentioned as our team was very small and everyone covered more than one role.
What films is 'Revive' similar to institutionally?
Institutionally, all of the social realism films that have been distributed by Film4 are similar institutionally to our film. These include: 'This Is England', 'Trainspotting' and 'East is East'. Film4 support first time film makers and directors and fund about 20 films a year. They can be released very easily by Film4, as it has its own freeview channel, films can simply be released through this. In addition, advertising is key with Film4, they create postcards, posters and any other means to encourage people to watch their films. Although not a large Hollywood company, Film4 have managed to get some of their films in cinemas, either before or after being released on television, or as was the case with 'A Field in England', both at the same time. By working with Film4 we would have guaranteed freeview release, which would hopefully get others attention to want to display our film elsewhere.
What other companies are there that we could have used?
When deciding on a company that we desired to distribute our company we needed to consider both the style of our film, and the style of those companies. We instantly came to the conclusion that Hollywood companies such as 'Dreamworks' were out of reach as they did not compliment any aspect of our film. We began looking a television based companies as through research we discovered that these focused a lot more on independent small films. The two we were most interested in were BBC Films and Film4, both of which are partnered to major television companies. To narrow it down we looked at the genres of films which they distribute and which one ours was therefore most similar to. BBC do not distribute many social realism films, we chose Film4 as we discovered that the films which we did original research on, were mainly distributed by them, therefore our film would fit perfectly into their style.
Evaluation Question 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups ?
SUMMARY:
The social groups that we represent are:
- Middle-class
- Teenagers
- Parents
- White-British
- Females

Verisimedia Final Logo
We really liked the style of the original drawn out logo. However when we placed this at the beginning of our film we decided that although it looked good, it didn't quite work as a still image. We decided that we would film it being drawn out, then speed it up and put a little jingle type sound to it. I am really pleased with the final product of this as it took the original idea and has created something which looks professional and fun whilst doing its job. We also feel that it is quite memorable and would therefore aid promotion of out production company.
Original Verisimedia Logo
This is the original logo which was designed for our production company. As our company is named in a way to focus on real life and our film is social realism, I wanted to use something to relate to both of these concepts. Therefore I have used the idea of a cityscape with flats involved, typically portraying social housing, a key focus of social realism. I have combined this with a hand drawn design as this relates more to people and has a more 'real life' feel to it as well as being original in the logo of a production company. I am very pleased with how it has turned out.
